First Ever Gamifying Pediatrics Hackathon was a great success

The Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) Innovation Studio was thrilled to host our first ever Gamifying Pediatrics Hackathon April 12 – 14, 2019 at BCG Digital Ventures in Manhattan Beach, CA! Our hackathon included nearly 200 participants from the greater Los Angeles and Southern California communities to tackle challenges in pediatric health care delivery and to develop solutions to improve care delivery for children.

“Curated collisions are the secret of effective innovation. Our hackathon surrounded smart, passionate developers with clinical leaders, tech industry experts and healthcare executives, allowing for random interactions that enabled the creation of incredible innovative solutions,” said Omkar Kulkarni, Chief Innovation Officer of the CHLA Innovation Studio.

The Innovation Studio’s recently formed Digital Health Lab is addressing three areas within pediatric healthcare: (1) enhancing digital therapeutic care for patients; (2) improving clinical education and training for doctors, nurses and patient families; and (3) transforming the patient and family experience so that the clinical setting is more appealing and less frightening for young patients. The Digital Health lab aims to accelerate the development and implementation of digital health tools and technologies in pediatric health care delivery. This year’s focus is on augmented reality, virtual reality, gamification and immersive digital experiences. The Gamifying Pediatrics Hackathon was the perfect event to bring together an ecosystem of passionate people with diverse expertise and background experiences to kick off this work.

Over the course of 48 hours, Hackathon participants pitched 47 ideas and formed 22 teams that created rough prototypes, presenting their ideas to a judging panel of CHLA experts on the final day. Ten teams were selected as semi-finalists who are advancing to the Digital Health Lab incubation phase, where they receive free mentorship while developing their prototypes over the next six months.

Digital Health Lab teams will be presenting their prototypes during two Demo Days in October 2019. At CHLA Demo Day, up to three teams will be chosen as finalists, each receiving up to $15,000+ in seed grants, plus the opportunity to pilot their products at CHLA. In addition, the finalists will receive the opportunity have their product introduced at HLTH, one of the nation’s largest health innovation conference, taking place in October in Las Vegas.

The Innovation Studio is grateful for the support of our sponsors and mentors that made our Gamifying Pediatrics Hackathon successful and for all of our CHLA providers and staff that shared their challenges and continue to work with teams to refine prototypes.
