CHLA Innovation Studio launches Gamifying Wednesdays!
John Maeda said, “Design used to be the seasoning you’d sprinkle on for taste; now it’s the flour you need at the start of the recipe”. In this spirit, the CHLA Innovation Studio officially launched Gamifying Wednesdays at the hospital to invite patients and families to test games and developing prototypes and to provide their feedback as we develop solutions to health care challenges! Gamifying Wednesdays will be held 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. in the Family Resource Center each Wednesday and are open to all patients and families.
Gamifying Wednesdays provide patients and families the opportunity to test out prototypes that the Digital Health Lab teams are developing and to provide their feedback directly to the developers. The Digital Health Lab teams are eager to have the unique opportunity to receive feedback directly from patients and families as they develop their solutions.
The first Gamifying Wednesday was held July 24th along with a special feedback session attended by the CHLA Junior Ambassadors! Over 20 children attended the first session and were able to play with and provide feedback to Virtual Real Heart, Mila, Manatee and Playing Forward. From the words of one of our Junior Ambassadors, “We got to learn about a few different projects in development and give feedback… I loved it!”
Describing Playing Forward’s physical therapy dance game, one child described this “cool new invention” that “can be used to treat patients in new ways; for example, kids who need physical therapy could play a game like this that can be tailored to their needs to they can have fun while also healing!”
Steve Jobs said, “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” It is not always easy to get direct feedback from children, patients and their families as companies design products, but it’s critical for iterative product development and for creating engaging solutions that children will want to use. Gamifying Wednesdays provides a unique opportunity for the Digital Health Lab teams to test their prototypes and demos so that we can engage patients and families in innovation and learning together.
The Junior Ambassadors had a lot of fun and enjoyed this innovative learning experience: “My sister and I got to join other Junior Ambassadors to meet some awesomely talented game designers and test drive some of their in-development games!”
Gamifying Wednesdays will be held at the Family Resource Center at CHLA’s main campus each Wednesday and are open to all patients and families. The next session with the Junior Ambassadors is scheduled for August 14th.
